Colder weather is quickly coming over California and that means making sure you’re taking steps to ensuring you’re keeping your home adequately, and safely heated. The winter months also coincide with the holiday season, meaning there is often a surplus of decorations, bright lights and candles. That’s why it is important to practice fire prevention to make sure you and your family are always safe from any potential fire hazards.

Let’s take a look at some important fire tips to remember.

Check Your Smoke Detectors

Although they should be regularly checked, smoke detectors are actually one aspect of home maintenance that is typically forgotten about. Remember, accidents can still happen, but technology is one of the best ways to keep the worst from happening. As it becomes colder and more holiday décor is used, be sure to check with your landlord to ensure all smoke detectors work properly.

Use Your Fireplace Safely

A lit fireplace can create a cozy atmosphere, but remember improper use can lead to dire consequences. Practice fire safety with the whole family and be sure to always keep a screen in place to prevent an sparks or embers from the rest of the home.

Be Smart with ALL Decorations

The holidays are a perfect time to make your home shine with the festivities occurring, however, making sure to place them in appropriate areas should be just as important. Candles, heaters, and even Christmas trees need to be placed properly to ensure they don’t become winter fire hazards. Don’t block heaters, be sure all candles are at a safe distance from children and pets, and make sure your tree isn’t too close to the fireplace.
